Blue Death-Feigning Beetles
These interesting “darkling beetles” are known to live up to 10 years. They mainly live in USA deserts. Their name comes from their tendency to play dead when bothered, combined with a powder blue colored oating they excrete on themselves to protect them from the sun. In the wild they eat bits of plant material but here they are happy to eat carrots and various fruits or veggies. If they get wet they turn a flat black color, but their ghostly, pale blue coloration reappears after they dry out. These are very active beetles and safe to hold in your hands! Why do you think they play dead? If a predator bothers them but thinks the beetle is dead, the predator may lose interest and look elsewhere for lunch. After a while the beetle gets back up and walks away.
